Throughout my time as an editor at The Suffolk Journal, I’ve not only found my voice in writing, discovered my place as a journalist and learned the ins and outs of editing, but I’ve also found my people.
When I joined The Journal, I had no intention of viewing myself as a journalist. I was merely a fiction writer with a desire to have any writing of mine published, even if it wasn’t creative.
Somehow, what I was doing clicked, and within a semester, I was editing stories and pitching ideas. Now, in my final year at Suffolk and at The Journal, I’m the managing editor, and am proud of the contributions I have made to this paper. From winning national awards to making young, aspiring writers feel heard in the newsroom, The Journal has given me a place to feel confident in my writing, my editing and myself.
As I leave the newsroom with fiction manuscripts in my pocket and the drive to continue my dreams of becoming an author, I can’t help but thank the people I’ve met at The Journal along the way who have encouraged and inspired me to become the best writer I can be.
To former Editor-in-Chief Shealagh Sullivan, who saw my talent and fostered it.
To adviser Charlie St. Amand, who led and taught me all while making me and everyone in the newsroom smile.
To Opinion Editor Victoria White, who has proved that I am leaving the Opinion section in the finest hands.
To current Editor-in-Chief Maren Halpin, who believed in me and trusted me beyond any shadow of a doubt that I was capable of being her right-hand woman.
And to all of the editors I have worked with in my years at the Journal, I thank you and I love you.
I couldn’t ask for a better team of writers and journalists to work with on my final edition of The Suffolk Journal.
