Starting this year, The Suffolk Journal will endorse student government executive board candidates.

The Journal’s endorsements will be for the 2026-2027 Student Government Association president and vice president and will be decided through unanimous votes from our editorial board of 18 student editors.

As all universities face unprecedented challenges and must make top-down changes that impact students of both today and tomorrow, strong student leadership is as crucial as ever. We need student leaders who are willing to think critically, listen to their peers and make actionable changes to represent the student body. In exceptionally competitive races this year, we at The Journal feel it is our responsibility to guide and empower our community to leaders they can trust.

We also understand that as students, we are busy – many of you do not have hours to research numerous candidates, and that is where we hope to come in. Our endorsements will be deeply researched from our own staff writers’ profiles of every candidate, as well as campaign material they have made public.

I want to assure you all that these endorsements will in no way impact our ability to maintain journalistic standards of objectivity. Any reporter who is involved in covering SGA, including Assistant News Editor Nyla Perez, will not be voting on endorsements to maintain this objectivity. Any editor who discloses significant personal ties to any presidential or vice presidential candidate will also be asked to recuse themselves from that vote.
