The Suffolk University women’s soccer team extended its winning streak to four this week with a 2-0 win at UMass Boston and a 3-0 win versus Wentworth, giving the team plenty of momentum to start off the final month of the regular season.
At UMass Boston, both goals came in the second half, as junior midfielder Avery Porter started the scoring with a header off a corner from Scarlett D’Amico in the 70th minute. Senior midfielder Lily Goldmann would seal the win with a powerful strike in the final minute of play.
Against Wentworth, Suffolk would quickly go out to a 2-0 lead through strong goals from the sides of the box from D’Amico and Goldmann in the 13th and 32nd minutes, respectively. After a long period of stalemate, Porter would solidify the win with a header from a corner by Tatum Flynn in the 83rd minute.
The win puts Suffolk on a solid track for the rest of Conference of New England conference play, improving the team to a conference record of 3-1, placing them second in the conference standings. However, the wins give Suffolk the strongest overall record in the conference at 8-1-2.
“I think when you have a group that plays for each other, plays together, comes with intensity and brings that level of aggression. That creates a good mix, and that’s been kind of our bread and butter this whole year,” said head coach Ellie McDougall.
Suffolk brought the aggression to both games, peppering UMass Boston with 10 shots on goal and Wentworth with six. The team generally controlled possession throughout both games as well and prevented either team from gaining any solid chances, only allowing three shots on goal from UMass Boston and two from Wentworth.
Suffolk’s goalkeeping continued to be exceptional whenever UMass Boston or Wentworth had chances. Sophomore goalkeeper Jaiden Wilds secured her third win as a goalkeeper this season with a three-save shutout performance against UMass Boston, and freshman goalkeeper Arden Rose secured her fifth win with a two-save clean sheet against Wentworth.
The game didn’t come without difficulties, though, as despite their success, the Rams squad has dealt with some adversity this season.
“We battled through a lot of injuries, a lot of sicknesses right now, and everyone stepped up and came to play,” said Avery Porter, who scored against both UMass Boston and Wentworth.
While the game against Wentworth was on a warm afternoon, against UMass Boston, it was a cold and windy night game, but that didn’t faze the Rams.
“It’s always fun to play under the lights at night. I enjoy it, it’s a good atmosphere, it’s high intensity, everyone’s always ready to go,” said Porter.
The Rams will look to continue their winning streak on the road next week against Roger Williams Oct. 11 at 3 p.m. and the University of New England Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. Their next home game will be Saturday, Oct. 18 at 12 p.m. against Gordon College.
