The Kansas City Chiefs triumphed over the Buffalo Bills at the AFC Championship on Jan. 26 and secured their spot to play at Super Bowl LIX. NFL fans from all over are angry and upset at their win; fans are taking their anger out on the Chiefs unnecessarily, as they are mad their favorite teams did not make it as far.
Because of the Chief’s successes this past season as well as the years past, they have become one of the most disliked teams in the NFL.
The question is, are the Chiefs now a nationally hated team because of their players and coaching staff, or because fans don’t like to see one team always winning?
As someone who was born and raised in Massachusetts since the 2000s, all New Englanders know firsthand how it feels to be on the receiving side of that hatred, especially regarding the NFL. Other fans are simply mad that their favorite team has not made it as far and decide to take their anger out on the team that has, which in this case, is the Chiefs.
When the Patriots dynasty was at its peak during the “Tom Brady Era,” they were arguably the most hated team in the league. From back-to-back Super Bowl wins, to “Deflategate,” NFL fans from all over despised the Patriots, and New Englanders were the only ones in the nation rooting for their hometown team.
The same thing seems to be happening with the Chiefs, as each year they have advanced farther and farther into the season, the more disliked they have become.
One of the reasons the Chiefs are highly disliked by almost every state in the country could be the over-exposure of the team. Most fans will root for the “underdog” of the matchup unless of course, their favorite team is playing. At this point in the league, the Chiefs are no underdog and are currently considered one of the best teams in the NFL.
The Chiefs also have certain standout players on the team, including tight end Travis Kelce and quarterback Patrick Mahomes. These players have led the team to victory in the past several years, so it is highly possible that fans who don’t like the Chiefs are simply sick of them because of their success.
Like them or not, it is undeniable that the Chiefs had an excellent season, as they now advance to the Super Bowl with a fantastic 15-2 record, making them first in the AFC West. This most likely goes hand in hand with the fan hatred, as people sitting by their TVs are watching their favorite teams get beat by the Chiefs all season.
It also seems that people might not like the Chiefs anymore due to Kelce’s relationship with world-renowned pop star Taylor Swift. Because of this, she has been attending all of Kelce’s games and the media is all over it, constantly cutting the broadcast to show her at any given moment, which has angered fans who want to see the gameplay and not Swift’s reaction to plays.
Fans are overdramatizing this problem, as it does not affect any gameplay on the field at all.
With the Super Bowl being just a few days away, fans are starting to place their bets on who will win the biggest matchup of the year. I think that Kansas City will triumph over the Philadelphia Eagles, as they had a slightly better record this season, and also because the Eagles fell short during the same matchup at the Super Bowl in 2023.
The Chiefs take on the Eagles on Sunday, Feb. 9, at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, La.
