Meg Smith performed her dazzling opening set for Molly Grace’s Blush tour at Paradise Rock Club in Boston Oct 19. Equipped with angel wings and a halo, the self-proclaimed patron saint of pop got new and old fans alike invested in her songs.
“Every time Halloween comes around, I am reminded of the time I got broken up with on Halloween,” said Smith to the audience, which elicited gasps and boos.
“So me and my roommates Googled how to cast a spell on him. And this spell totally worked, swear to God it did,” said Smith. “So I thought if it was cool with y’all, maybe we could cast a spell together right now?”
As a smaller artist, Smith avoids the elusiveness that comes with celebrity status. She encouraged concertgoers to meet her at the merch table after her set. To break the ice, she provided a list of conversation topics, including Halloween costumes and favorite Chappell Roan songs.
She also hosts monthly parties on Zoom to do crafts, make friends and connect with her fans, “Meg heads.”
She aims to make real connections as seen by her free fan meetups before every show. In Boston, she met with five fans at LimeRed Teahouse to chat for an hour and take pictures. It was one of these fans that provided the culprit for Smith’s spell.
“Bex flew from Denver to come here tonight,” said Smith. “Bex, what happened with your ex?”
“I moved [my ex and I] to Los Angeles with my entire savings and they didn’t spend a penny. So I dumped their ass and moved back to Denver,” said Bex.
Born in Los Angeles herself, Smith is familiar with the betrayals of exes. Her songs are nostalgic of 2000s pop hits such as “Since U Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson or “Part of Me” by Katy Perry. Smith’s song about casting a spell on her ex, “Cross My Heart I Hope U Die,” is an energizing revenge song featured in many Halloween playlists.
“Ready to cast a spell on Bex’s ex?” asked Smith. “Now, casting a spell is very simple, you’re gonna repeat after me and say it with conviction!”
With such a recognizable brand, Smith is well on her way to fame. Her wings and halo have been part of her look for years. She is all about the color pink: her roots are dyed pink and she played a self-taught solo on a shiny pink saxophone. As she pointed out on Instagram, she makes the perfect Halloween costume.
“This spell is for your ex!” said Smith, and the crowd chanted in response. The energized call-and-return continued for the rest of the spell. “From now on they’ll have bad breath! And really bad sex!”
The fun didn’t stop at casting spells: Smith encouraged the audience to join in with British accents for her song “you fake your british accent.”
“You’re gonna repeat after me, and do your most posh and most obnoxious British accents!” said Smith. The jovial song was about an ex who faked his British accent for the entirety of their relationship, which brought laughs from the crowd.
She also played the chorus of her next single “Carlos, Get in the Car!” which will be released Oct. 24. In comparison to fans screaming every lyric of the rest of her set, Smith’s voice was the only one in the room as she leaked her next hit. The song was dramatic, whimsical and a gift to her best friend.
Smith did not only cast a spell on Bex’s ex, she cast a spell on the entire audience.
“left the blush tour with a new favorite artist,” posted Instagram user malavika.anil_ to a photo of Smith.
Other fans posted photos of them with Smith at the merch table holding her iconic “I got baptized at the Meg Smith concert” sign.
Smith’s debut album “Disco Dystopia” comes out Nov. 7, so it’s not too late to be an early fan of the rising star. As Smith said on her album’s announcement post: “it’s chaotic, sparkly, messy and so me let’s go to the disco ;)”
