This week, Suffolk University baseball began a three game win streak, rising to sixth place in the Conference of New England.
“The conference seems to be open for a playoff spot right now. We knew we had to turn it on this week,” said utility player Alex Sorenti-Burns. “It means a lot. We’ve struggled a lot in conference play so four wins in a row would mean a lot to us.”
The win streak started April 17 with a 13-7 victory over the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Sorenti-Burns drove in the first run of the game as the Rams got off to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Rams would continue on a roll, soaring to a 13-3 lead off a grand slam by catcher Max Martin.
Sorenti-Burns noted how this recent offensive explosion is something they felt was coming after initially struggling out the gate this season.
“I think it’s a matter of law of averages. We have some really good players on this team. I don’t think the games before that we showed how good our offense could be. We kind of just turned it around,” said Sorenti-Burns.
Two days later in a doubleheader against Curry College, the Ram offense continued its hot streak by scoring 24 total runs across both games.
Behind a two run home run from designated hitter Sebastian Lampert to take their first lead of the game and two RBIs from shortstop Sam Armbruster, the Rams picked up a come-from-behind 6-3 win in game one.
With the offense rolling, Sorenti-Burns praised the team for keeping their heads up after a tough start to the year and remaining positive as they fight for playoff seeding.
“Before games as a team we’ve been trying to keep the positive energy high. We set offensive goals, like to score first, score last or score seven runs. We’re trying to keep that mindset going into every game,” said Sorenti-Burns.
To end the series, Suffolk picked up a dominant 18-3 win over Curry.
Outfielder Max Iorio and catcher Max Martin combined for 10 RBIs in the game, leading the scorching hot offense to the big win. Both hit grand slams, with Martin hitting his second grand slam in three games to drive in four runs during the second inning.
Sorenti-Burns praised Martin’s hitting, noting the big impact that having a hitter as good as Martin has had on the team.
“I think he’s been good all year. He’s probably the best offensive catcher there is in all of New England. You can just see it in the work he takes. It’s huge for us to have a really good hitting catcher, it’s extremely rare especially in college baseball. He’s really turning it on this year, he’s probably one of the better athletes on this team,” said Sorenti-Burns.
As the Rams look to make a playoff run, Sorenti-Burns gave credit to the recent lights-out pitching from pitchers like Pierce Salbego and Harry Meehan. He expects the offense to get into rhythm from here as they make a playoff push.
“You can expect our pitching to continue to perform the way it is. People can really expect our offense to finally turn around. It was a struggle in the first part of the year for us, but now I’m starting to see the potential we have one through nine in the lineup. I think in the next couple games we’re really going to boost our offensive stats and come into the playoffs hot,” said Sorenti Burns.
The Rams will continue their season with a Senior Day doubleheader against Western New England University April 26.
“Every single game we play in the conference is a must win. We’re going in with a playoff mindset. Suffolk made the playoffs 24 years in a row when it comes to the baseball team, so it’s playoff or bust for us here,” said Sorenti-Burns.
