This week in Suffolk University sports: Baseball’s losing streak reaches six, softball returns with two doubleheader sweeps, lacrosse splits two game week, women’s golf shines and history made for outdoor track & field.
Baseball extends losing streak to 6
Taking on Babson College April 9, baseball was battling with the Beavers, entering the eighth inning tied 4-4. The floodgates opened from there, as the Babson offense lit up Suffolk pitcher John McDevitt for five runs in the inning to coast to a 9-4 win. It’s the second time the Rams have lost to the Beavers this season.
Facing UMass Boston the next day, the Rams couldn’t rally all the way back from a 7-0 deficit. A six run sixth inning by the Beacons put them ahead 7-0 after scoring once in the fifth. The Rams offense rallied for four runs in the ninth but couldn’t plate three more. Their losing streak is now at six games, with a 7-17 overall record.
Softball returns with four straight wins
Having not played since March 23 due to rainout after rainout, softball returned to the field April 10 for a doubleheader against the University of New England fully rested.
It worked in their favor, as they swept the doubleheader with the Nor’Easters, winning game one 11-3 and game two 6-4 to improve to 8-10 on the season. Originally scheduled for April 12, a doubleheader against Gordon College was moved up to April 11, but the Rams didn’t miss a beat.
Game one was a close 3-1 win for the Rams. Game two was not close, as a six run third inning and a three run sixth inning helped Suffolk run away with a 12-2 win over the Fighting Scots. The consecutive doubleheader sweeps move Suffolk to 10-10 on the season and 4-0 in Conference of New England play.
Up next for the Rams was a doubleheader against Endicott College April 15. The Rams had a 3-0 lead after two innings in game one, which quickly gave way to a 6-1 Endicott run over the final five innings to give the Gulls a 6-4 win. Game two was suspended in the fourth inning due to unplayable field conditions caused by heavy rain with Suffolk ahead 3-0 at the time.
Lacrosse splits two game week
Lacrosse took on UNE at home April 9, losing their third straight game as they were handed a 14-8 loss by the Nor’Easters. The offense was consistent, scoring two goals in each quarter. However, UNE’s was more potent, as they scored twice in the first quarter, five times in the second, three times in the third and four times in the fourth.
The Rams got back to .500 at 7-7 when they took on Gordon at home April 12, defeating the Fighting Scots 18-15 as their CNE record also got back to .500 at 3-3. Ally Colburn continued her rise to stardom as a freshman, supplying 10 of the Rams’ 18 goals. Julia Dickinson had a seven point game behind four goals and three assists while Charlotte Guziejka made eight saves in goal.
Women’s golf shines at Cortland invite
Women’s golf competed at the Cortland Martin/Wallace Invitational April 12 and 13. The Rams combined to shoot at 692, placing in third as a team behind Union College and Ithaca College.
All five Suffolk golfers finished in the top 40 individually. Ella Torsleff placed 17th, Emory Goodson ended up in 25th and Clare Stackpole-McGrath finished in 35th place.
Men’s tennis continues search for first win
Men’s tennis took on Roger Williams University and Nichols College in road matches April 9 and 10. Both matches ended in 7-0 losses for the Rams, who now sit at 0-9 this season with just four singles wins to their name. The Rams dropped to 0-10 with a 7-0 loss to Gordon April 15, extending their overall losing streak to 15 games.
