This week in Suffolk University sports: baseball and softball return from Florida trip, lacrosse wraps up non-conference schedule and men’s tennis remains winless.
Baseball returns with two win week
Baseball returned to the friendly confines of East Boston Memorial Park with a home matchup against Worcester Polytechnic Institute March 20. Alex Sorenti-Burns blasted two home runs and the Suffolk bullpen provided six scoreless innings to defeat the Engineers.
The Rams opened their Conference of New England schedule with a March 22 doubleheader against Roger Williams University. The Rams scored three runs in the final two innings of the first game to back up a seven-inning start from pitcher Pierce Salbego to pick up a 6-4 win. Despite rallying for three runs in the top of the ninth inning in game two, the Hawks hit an RBI double in the bottom of the inning to secure a 7-6 walk-off win.
Softball splits pair of doubleheaders
Softball took on Simmons University in a doubleheader March 22. Suffolk took a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning of the first game before Simmons stormed to a six-run inning off six hits and a few Suffolk errors, giving Suffolk a 6-1 loss to start the day.
The Rams returned with a vengeance in the second game, shutting out the Sharks with a 7-0 victory. Lily Newhall threw a one-hit shutout on the mound while the Rams scored six of their seven runs in the second inning. Catherine Carignan’s sixth-inning home run made it 7-0, her first home run of the season and just the second home run for the team.
The next day, Suffolk clashed with Emerson College in another doubleheader. The Rams lost game one 4-0 after giving up four runs in the third inning, while the Suffolk offense was shut down by Emerson pitcher Caleigh Sheehan.
In the second game, Newhall returned to the mound and delivered another complete game as the Rams split the doubleheader with a 7-2 win over the Lions. Suffolk scored in four of the seven innings and had two multi-run innings to keep the Lions at bay. The pair of doubleheader splits put the Rams at 6-10 as they begin CNE play.
Lacrosse splits two game week
Lacrosse hosted the Fitchburg State University Falcons March 22, with the Rams dropping to 3-3 to begin the season with a 16-11 loss.
Suffolk scored five goals in the first and second quarter to enter halftime with a 10-8 lead. Fitchburg State took a 12-11 lead after three quarters and buried the Rams in the fourth, keeping Suffolk off the scoreboard while adding four goals of their own to seal the 16-11 final.
The Rams took on Rhode Island College March 24, using a second half surge to pick up a 20-16 win, improving to 4-4.
Trailing 10-7 at halftime and 13-7 within the first few minutes of the third quarter, the Rams went on a 13-3 run to win and pick up the highest single game goal total in program history. Ally Colburn led Suffolk scoring with eight goals and one assist, with Julia Dickinson adding five goals and one assist.
Men’s tennis remains winless with two loss weekend
Men’s tennis hosted Emerson in their first home match of the season March 21, with Emerson sweeping the Rams in both doubles and singles play to hand Suffolk a decisive 7-0 loss.
The next day, Suffolk traveled to face Western New England University. The Golden Bears routed the Rams with a 6-1 win. The only Suffolk win came in singles play as Abhi Patel defeated WNE’s Colby Esposito. Patel’s singles win was the first of his collegiate career.
