This week in Suffolk University sports: Men’s hockey pushes winning streak to three games, women’s hockey sweeps two game weekend, men’s basketball starts conference play strong and track & field kicks off indoor season.
Men’s hockey secures perfect December
Men’s hockey faced Wesleyan University Dec. 1, using a pair of goals in both the second and third periods to beat the Cardinals 4-2. CJ Hapward had 36 saves as the Rams improved to 4-4-2.
Playing against new Conference of New England rival Johnson & Wales University both Dec. 6 and Dec. 7, both games ended in 1-0 shutout wins for the Rams. Michael McEachern scored the lone goal in the first game and Ryan Webb had the goal in the second game while Hapward combined for 39 saves over both games. Suffolk is now 6-4-2 overall and 3-4-1 in CNE play.
Women’s hockey sweeps weekend set
Facing Curry College Dec. 6, women’s hockey rallied from a 3-0 deficit to take down the Colonels 4-3 with four unanswered goals. Sam Molind and Leslie Steiner started the comeback with goals in the second period, while Bella Schmidt and Alexia Hill scored in the third period.
A rematch with the Colonels was on deck the next day and the Rams took care of business again with a 5-2 win, improving to 5-6 on the season. Katie Newkirk powered the Suffolk offense with two goals, while Jenna Caballero and Anya Nichipor provided two assists. Katelyn Michals made 44 saves as the Rams improved to 9-2-1 lifetime against Curry.
Men’s basketball perfect in CNE play
Taking on the University of New England Dec. 4, men’s basketball beat the Nor’Easters 84-75 to start conference play on the right foot. Keenan Robertson paced the Rams offense with a 26 point, 14 rebound double-double. Cole LeVangie scored 15 points and Danny Yardemian added 19 to join Robertson in double figures.
Facing Curry College Dec. 7, the Rams left no doubt as a 52-18 lead at halftime paved the way for a 90-42 win over the Colonels.
Nick Verdile led the Rams offense with 21 points while Devin Dzikas added 17 points and both Robertson and LeVangie produced 15 points. The Rams forced 16 turnovers by Curry and won their 11th straight game against the Colonels. They are 37-7 against Curry all time.
Against Endicott College Dec. 10, the Rams won their third straight game and third CNE game with a 77-73 win over the Gulls. Robertson paced all scorers with a 32 point showing, while Dzikas chipped in 13 points off the bench. Yardemian and LeVangie each had 10 points.
Women’s basketball stumbles through conference play
Women’s basketball lost their first CNE game of the season against UNE Dec. 4 by a 74-54 final score. The Rams were down 16-11 after the first quarter and 38-27 at halftime. Their fate was sealed in the fourth quarter when the Nor’Easters outscored the Rams 22-8. Colby Guinta and Jordan Moreau had double digit point totals.
The Rams bounced back against Curry Dec. 7, improving to 1-1 in CNE play with a 83-46 rout of the Colonels.
Suffolk held Curry scoreless for over five minutes in the first quarter to set the tone early, scoring 15 unanswered points in that time. Guinta, Maddie Stewart, Allison Bono and Akiyah Brown each had double digit point totals as the Rams won their 12th straight against the Colonels.
The Rams couldn’t string together a second win in a row against Endicott Dec. 10, losing 70-60 to the Gulls. Endicott outscored the Rams in the first three quarters to put Suffolk in a deficit they couldn’t find their way out of. The Rams still had three players in double figures for points, as Guinta, Stewart and Brown had 13, 11 and 11 points respectively.
Track & Field kicks off season with three meet weekend
Men’s and women’s track & field competed in two meets Dec. 7 and one Dec. 8 to start the indoor season. Amalia Dorion competed in the five kilometer race at Boston University, securing a spot at the DIII New England Championships in February with a 17:55.23 time.
At the new balance Early Bird Invitational Dec. 7, Sydney Fogg and Sofia Moukaddem competed in the five kilometer race and each set personal records. Fogg put together a 18:17.68 time and Moukaddem crossed the finish line in 18:35.70. Fogg’s performance secured a spot at the DIII championships.
Tim Barry set a new personal record in the three kilometer race at the Early Bird Invitational, crossing the finish line in 8:39.09. Kely Maloney competed in the mile and was just short of a new personal record with a 4:37.50 time.
The men’s and women’s squad also competed at the UMass Boston Beacon Invitational. The men’s 4 x 200 meter ‘A’ team set a school record with a 1:35.35 showing, and Michael Makiej set the school high jump record by clearing 1.85 meters.
Three members of the women’s team qualified for the DIII New England Championships at the Beacon invite, with Emily Concepcion qualifying in the 400 meter run, Bailey Stoddard qualifying in the 60 meter hurdles and Averie Denelle qualifying in the high jump. Denelle also set the school record in high jump after clearing 1.60 meters.
