Amazon to unveil plans for new headquarter locations

Retail magnate Amazon Inc. is set to announce plans for a second and third headquarters, both supposedly located along the Eastern Seaboard. The New York Times reported Monday that the company plans to split its second headquarters between Long Island City, a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens, and the Crystal City neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia outside of Washington, D.C. Amazon executives held meetings with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio two weeks ago. “I am doing everything I can… I’ll change my name to Amazon Cuomo if that’s what it takes,” Governor Cuomo said. Amazon first announced plans for a second headquarters in addition to its Seattle hub in September of 2017. Boston was originally on the shortlist of finalists for the headquarters, but reportedly did not make the cut. 240 municipalities made pitches to Amazon over the last year. Amazon is currently the world’s highest-valued publicly-traded corporation, with a brand value of $150.8 billion. It is the second-largest internet retailer behind Alibaba Group. The additional headquarters are set to create up to 50,000 new jobs between the two facilities with the average annual salary projected to be over $100,000 according to NPR.
