After sweeping Wheelock in a double-header on April 7, the Suffolk University softball team has since dropped four consecutive games. This season has been a rough one for the Rams as they have had difficulty with both pitching and scoring runs.
The Rams are currently 6-16 overall, including a 1-9 home record and a 1-7 record against teams in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. They have had the most success on the road, where they are 4-3.
Although the Rams have a poor record, all the players on the squad have still given great efforts in each and every game. Some players are putting up tremendous statistics, too.
Freshman Lindsey Rogers is batting .463 with a team-leading 31 hits, nine doubles, and four triples. She also has scored 15 runs and added 15 RBI this season. Junior Cali Loura is hitting .403 with a team-leading two home runs. She also has contributed with two home runs, 27 hits, 21 runs, and 14 RBI.
Junior Karina Bolster has 26 hits this season as well as a .371 batting average. Senior Monica Cioffi has contributed to the team with a 3.06 average, including 15 hits and 11 runs scored.
Freshman Samantha McGilvray is having a solid season for her first year in a Rams uniform. She is hitting .300 with 18 hits and 11 RBIs.
Senior Clara Conklin has also been a big contributor for the Rams, as she has batted .258 with 16 hits, eight runs, and five RBI.
The Rams also have four pitchers who have done their best to keep the ship somewhat afloat. McGilvray has started 12 games this season, and has a fairly impressive 3.40 ERA. She has pitched 68 innings, having given up only 33 earned runs while striking out 31 batters.
Junior Liz Galvin has also pitched well for Suffolk. She has started nine games and has also struck out 31 total batters this season. Brooke Hirschfeld, a junior, has pitched seven innings for the Rams this season and has 1-0 record.
The softball team is hoping their young players step up for them for the rest of this season and next. Sophomore Lauren Barrett, as well as freshman Sydni Arnett, Nikki Cignarella, Julianna Riconda and Mandi Thornton will all be expected to lead the team the next few seasons.
Keri Lemasters, the Head Coach for the softball team, has had the position for the past three seasons. The assistant coaches are Toma Lovasco and Jill Dailey.
Suffolk has 16 games remaining on their schedule this season, with their last two games being on Saturday, April 23 against St. Joseph, Connecticut. Both the players and coaches are hoping that the team can improve their record and turn their season around.
