This week in Suffolk University sports: men’s and women’s hockey have winless weeks, women’s basketball continues conference woes, men’s basketball wins revenge game and track & field excels at weekend meets
Men’s hockey losing streak reaches five
Men’s hockey took on number-six-ranked Curry College on the road Jan. 31, with the Colonels handing the Rams a decisive 6-2 loss. Goalie CJ Hapward allowed five goals in the first period before being pulled in favor of Sophomore Max Banoun, who allowed one goal over the final 40 minutes.
The next day, the Rams offense could not solve Curry goalie Shane Soderwall, who beat the Rams for the second time in as many days while picking up his sixth shutout of the season. Hapward logged 35 saves in the game but could not hold off Curry’s potent scoring attack as the Rams lost their fifth straight game, dropping to 8-10-2 overall and 3-9-1 in Conference of New England play.
Women’s hockey dealt winless week
Women’s hockey faced the University of New England Nor’Easters Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, losing by identical 2-1 scores as they dropped from second place in the CNE down to fourth.
Cassie Borowski scored on the power play for Suffolk in the first game before UNE scored two unanswered goals in the second period to pick up the win. UNE got out to a 2-0 lead after two periods in the second game before Sammy Lassman’s third period goal for the Rams made it a 2-1 score. Kirsten DiCicco won both games in net for UNE, while Katelyn Michals got hit with the loss both times for Suffolk.
The Rams faced number-one-ranked Middlebury College at home Feb. 4, losing to the Panthers by a 4-1 score. Lily Abraham scored the only goal for the Rams as the two teams squared off for just the second time. The only time the teams had met previously was in the NCAA tournament in 2023.
Men’s basketball bests Roger Williams in revenge game
After being punched in the mouth by Roger Williams University with a 83-59 loss in January, men’s basketball got the better of the Hawks on home court Feb. 1 with a 93-81 victory in their second meeting since the squads faced off in the CCC championship game last year.
Keenan Robertson and Danny Yardemian were the stars of the show for the Rams. Robertson had a 37 point showing while collecting six rebounds and two assists, while Yardemian had a 23 point, 11 rebound double-double. Nick Verdile joined Robertson and Yardemian in double figures with a 13 point game.
Women’s basketball continues CNE struggles
After they got head coach Ed Leyden his 500th career win, women’s basketball could not get him number 501 against Roger Williams, losing 71-59 on home court to the Hawks.
Trailing 34-33 at halftime, Suffolk could not hold off the Hawks attack in the third quarter, as a 24-15 run for Roger Williams put them ahead for good. Amanda DeAngelis and Colby Guinta had double digit point totals, as DeAngelis had 17 points and Guinta added 14.
