This week in Suffolk University sports: volleyball continues dominance, women’s soccer sees undefeated start end, men’s soccer splits week, men’s golf tees off on season.
Volleyball has perfect week as torrid start continues
Entering the week with a strong 8-2 record, volleyball rattled off four more wins to improve to 12-2. With a six game winning streak, they sit in first place in the Conference of New England.
Playing at home against Framingham State University Sept. 17, Suffolk found themselves trailing 2-0 after a pair of sets. They proceeded to win the next three sets to get a comeback win in stunning fashion, with Suffolk winning the sets by scores of 25-12, 25-11 and 15-5.
Against the University of Southern Maine Sept. 19, the Rams won 3-1 to move to 10-2 overall. Senior outside hitter McKenna Keowen became the only player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills in the win after breaking the program’s kill record last season.
The Rams wrapped up the week with a tri-match against Mount Holyoke College and Worcester State University Sept. 21. Suffolk cruised to wins in both matches, beating both teams in straight sets.
Women’s soccer hits roadblocks as undefeated start ends
Women’s soccer saw their undefeated streak to open the season end, slipping up in two matches and winning one as their record now sits at 6-1-1 through eight games.
Against Lesley University Sept. 17, freshman Sinclaire Hart scored her first collegiate goal to give the Rams a 1-0 lead after the first half. Lesley was able to get on the board on a penalty kick in the second half to even the score for good.
Gordon College was the Rams’ first CNE opponent of the season, with the Fighting Scots picking up a 2-1 win. Junior Lily Goldmann’s goal with the Rams down 2-0 was the only goal they could get as Suffolk fell to 0-9 lifetime against Gordon.
Suffolk rebounded with a vengeance against Fisher College Sept. 24. The Rams scored seven goals in the first half and six goals in the second half as they left no doubt with a dominating 13-0 win against the Falcons.
The Rams put 22 shots on Falcons goalie Olivia Leo while Suffolk goalie Sophia Barker didn’t face a single shot on goal on the other end of the field.
Three Rams had multi-goal performances, led by Ella Marmash’s three goal, two assist game. Kylie Perron scored two goals, as did Lily Goldmann. CNE rookie of the week Sinclaire Hart had a goal and an assist.
Men’s soccer splits two game week
Looking to bounce back from a tie against Salem State University, men’s soccer took out their frustrations on the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Damon Smargon led the way for the Rams with a two goal, two assist showing in a 6-1 blowout victory. Luke Blawn, Tommy Kurz, Diego Pierantozzi and Edward Abouzeid had the other Suffolk goals.
Facing Gordon in their first CNE showdown of the season, the Rams and Fighting Scots had to settle for a 1-1 tie. Jack Phelps scored the only goal of the game for Suffolk as they now sit at 3-2-3 through eight games.
Men’s golf opens season with strong performance
Under new head coach Joshua Brickley, men’s golf started the fall slate with the Gillette Ridge Invitational Sept. 21 and 22.
Suffolk finished with a combined score of 621 over both days, good for a +45 overall. That gave them a third place finish in the 10 team field that featured CNE competition in Roger Williams University, the University of Hartford, the Wentworth Institute of Technology and Gordon.
Cross country’s season kicks into full gear
Men’s and women’s cross country had their second meet of the season at the Cardinal Invitational in Middletown, Connecticut.
Facing lots of highly ranked competition from the east and mideast regions, the men’s team ran to a sixth place finish out of eight teams. With four runners setting personal records, Suffolk finished ahead of CNE foe Endicott College as well as the University of New Haven in the eight kilometer race.
The women’s team faced a similarly competitive field in their six kilometer race. Behind a trio of personal records, the Rams came in seventh place in the 10 team field. They finished ahead of Union College as well as Endicott and New Haven.
Women’s tennis continues season opening slump
After losing their first match of the season, things did not get better for women’s tennis as the Rams currently sit 0-5 to begin the season.
It was a series of sweeps for the Rams, as they lost three matches by 7-0 decisions. They lost their CNE opener 7-0 to Gordon before dropping the match to Rhode Island College Sept. 19. In their home opener Sept. 21 against Endicott, it was another 7-0 loss for the Rams.
Their Sept. 24 match against Curry College was more competitive, but ended with another loss as the Rams fell 4-3 to drop to 0-5. Caren Urbano, Chloe Pszenny and Elene Nishnianidze picked up the Suffolk points as each won in singles play.
