At 8:54 p.m. last night, Martha Coakley was announced early as the winner in the Democratic Senate Primary. With an overwhelming 47 percent, Coakley has taken the votes of most towns and cities in Massachusetts.
Michael Capuano came in second with a 28 percent pull, mostly from the Boston and Cambridge areas. Alan Khazei and Stephen Pagliuca came close to a tie for third place in the primary, but Khazei pulled 13 percent of votes, leaving Pagliuca with only 12 percent.
Senate president Therese Murray was quoted saying, “[Coakley] won and she won big. And she won with such high numbers. This is certainly a mandate from the people that they want to see a change.”
Capuano also was quoted congratulating Coakley to her win.
“I want to congratulate the next senator of Massachusetts, Martha Coakley,” said Capuano. “She ran a good campaign and it was a good clean campaign. I want to be there to make her the next senator.”
She will be facing Republican Scott Brown in the general election, who won against Jack E. Robinson with 89 percent of the vote. Brown, a member of the Mass. National Guard is currently in his third term at a state senator from Wrentham, previously serving as a Representative, according to the Boston Globe.
