Gas leak prompts evacuation of 73 Tremont

By Melissa Hanson and Vassili Stroganov

Suffolk University’s 73 Tremont building was evacuated this afternoon when an odor of gas was detected, officials said.

The call for the gas leak came in at 4:44 p.m., Boston police said.

The Boston Fire Department responded to the gas leak, but left shortly after 5 p.m., said spokesman Steve MacDonald.

The Suffolk University Police Department was left to handle the leak. No one was injured, an officer said.

The university notified students via text message and email at around 5:15 p.m.

The leak is under investigation. The university notified students that the building was safe to re-enter just after 6 p.m.
