Clubs clench new members at Winterfest

Article By: Tom Logan

Winterfest, an event sponsored by the Student Leadership and Involvement office, comes at time when the clubs of Suffolk University hope to recruit new members for the spring semester. Students who attended the event were handed a passport featuring several locations and clubs on it. After one visited at least five of the locations, receiving a sticker from each, they would be able to redeem a prize, including caricatures, customized hats, photo magnets, and more. The entire event became more than just a clubs fair; it became a journey for free stuff.

Walking around the fourth and fifth floors of the Donahue building, one could see students talking with club members about what each club had in store for the future. The Ski and Snowboarding Club were giving out free hand warmers, as well as promoting upcoming ski trips and movie nights the club was hosting.

While the Student Government Association wad working to fill the newly created seats, they took some time off to help be a part of the welcome back party for all students, who gave feedback as to how SGA was doing. Suffolk Free Radio was looking for some new DJ’s as well as interns or anyone interested in the radio.

The Black Student Union is preparing several events for Black History Month, which starts in February. Some of these include a screening of Spike Lee’s School Daze (1988, Columbia Pictures) as well as an upcoming soul food luncheon.
Future Investors in Real Estate (FIRE) is holding an event on Feb. 2 featuring Jason Weissman, the founder of Boston Realty Advisors. Weissman will help students figure out exactly where their degree can take them.

Theta Phi Alpha, one of Suffolk’s two sororities, was also looking for new recruits. The group has fundraisers planned for the coming months. If you’re looking to do some volunteer work, SOULS encourages students to register online or stop by their office.

Students attending Winterfest were treated to treats and were snacking on snacks. A chocolate fountain dazzled the hungry, as fruits and other edible delights were placed around it, inviting all to dip them into the chocolaty goodness. In addition to free candies, vegetables, and hot chocolate.

All in all, Winterfest was a fun and interactive way to get students involved at Suffolk. All students who could not make it, and are interested in the many clubs and activities they could join at the University, should drop by the fourth and fifth floors of Donahue soon.
