Kerry ended his last official day as U.S. Senator by giving a speech full of thanks at Boston’s historic Faneuil Hall. Other speakers at the hour-and-a-half event included Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. The newly appointed interim senator to fill Kerry’s vacancy, William “Mo” Cowan, and both declared Democratic candidates for the upcoming special Senate election, Rep. Ed Markey and Rep. Stephen Lynch, were also in attendance.

Senator Warren, now the senior senator from Mass. after only a few weeks on the job, also wished Kerry well while assuring the crowd that the Secretary promised to stay in contact with her frequently to give advice about working in the Senate.Next, Gov. Patrick took to the stage to sing the praises of Kerry and introduce the newest Obama cabinet member, a half hour behind schedule.

Sec. Kerry began his speech by thanking the people who have supported and worked with him over the years of his public service, asking prominent politicians, aide workers, and his family members to stand up for recognition.On his last official day as a member of the Senate, Kerry had a lot to say about the institution. Focusing on his accomplishments and experiences there, many of which revolved around implications of the Vietnam War, he claimed that the system isn’t broken. Kerry advised that our men and women on the Hill need to learn to work together again as Kerry felt they use to.
