OPINION: Trump’s GoFundMe fundraiser needs to go

Former President of the United States, Donald Trump, speaking at the 2017 Conservative Political Action Conference in National Harbor, Maryland.

A GoFundMe to raise money for Donald Trump’s civil fraud fines has raised over $1 million after just a few days. The fundraiser has been set up by Elena Cardone, wife of investor Grant Cardone who supports the fundraiser on X. A fundraiser for a former President’s criminal trial is just outrageous.

In the GoFundMe description, Cardone states that she is an “advocate for justice,” and said, “The recent legal battles [Trump] faces are not just an attack on him, but an attack on the very ideals of fairness and due process that every American deserves.”

What comes into question is what part of the trial held in the New York court, as she said, is being attacked. Cardone also mentions “the very ideals of fairness” being questioned, yet all we have is facts when it comes to Trump’s case.

What do Trump supporters believe is unfair about the charges, and the trial in general? Many actually, about 20 percent of Trump supporters believe he should be sent to prison if convicted, but smaller groups such as these GoFundMe supporters are saying the trial is unfair. As decided by Judge Engoron, who is in sole charge of deciding the criminal charges, Trump had inflated property values to receive better offers from banks and insurance companies.

The judge had largely affirmed [Letitia] James’ allegations that Trump and others at his company had inflated valuations of his properties by hundreds of millions of dollars over the course of a decade and misrepresented his wealth by billions in a scheme, the state said, intended to trick banks and insurers into offering more favorable deal terms,” said CBS News in an article on the ruling of Trump’s case.

Arthur Engoron, the judge ruling in Trump’s civil fraud case, has ordered almost half a billion in fees in order to appeal the verdict, which is that Trump and the Trump Organization have engaged in fraud, such as false financial statements and business records. He now has one month to come up with the money.

Journalist and author, David Cay Johnston, said on NPR, “I think we don’t know how much he’s worth, but we know is, Donald always exaggerates and misleads.”

March 12 is the deadline for Trump to appeal the E. Jean Carroll case. He needs to put up a bond, and if he does not he may file for bankruptcy. Trump has filed for bankruptcy six times when he was unable to keep up with debt in his casino and hotel resorts.

With this being said, Trump is still a billionaire, with an estimated $2.6 billion net worth, according to Forbes. Trump has $870 million in just golf clubs and resorts and another $690 million in New York City real estate.

A fundraiser page raising baseless claims of “unfair treatment” within the New York court is outrageous, as nothing is supporting these claims. Cardone continues to post updates on the page about supporters, “generosity, support, and belief in our cause.”  This is a wildly inappropriate use of the GoFundMe website.

Without real evidence, this misrepresented fundraiser continues to raise thousands of dollars every day from MAGA supporters. The amount of money raised is incredible, that cannot be taken away, but it is money that is being given for the wrong reasons, as there is nothing but facts and evidence being supported in that courtroom. The New York Times has published the full ruling on his civil fraud case here.

As a proud American I felt compelled to contribute to President Trumps gofundme.
You have 80 million Americans that know he is the best choice to lead our country and he is our
Nominee for President, just to think corrupt and partisan district attorneys and judges in blue states would bring frivolous charges because of hate and to interfere with a presidential election is the criminal act.
It’s not just an act against President Trump,
It’s an act against the 80 million Trump supporters and democracy.
My contribution was to defend Trump and my fellow 80 million Patriots that are being attacked also

Elon Musk purports himself to be a Trump supporter, maybe he should cough up the half billion to pay Trump’s criminal activity penalties if he believes in the ‘man’ so much.

I am fascinated by those who think that DJT is not even entitled to have a gofundme. If you don’t want to give, so be it, but why seek for there to be none at all. Would not that be unfair to him and the people who choose to support him? Quite frankly, I am impressed with the woman who started the fund, and those who seek to contribute. They are putting their money where the mouths are. Power to the people (I Love it!)And for the record, I don’t see the crime. There seem to be no victims. In fact, banks want to work with him again. Yeah, this case is all political. I think I’ll give.

You have to be joking and must be utterly blind or plain stupid. DJT is nothing but a conman and a sensationalist joke of a human being. He has lied and cheated banks out of millions. He may have paid his loans but that means nothing.

The necessity for laws against financial fraud is underscored by the potential harm to numerous stakeholders. Envision a scenario where a diligent entrepreneur has cultivated a successful business over three decades, securing the confidence of banks, partners, and clients through transparency and integrity. Now, imagine a competitor emerges, engaging in deceitful practices to obtain favorable loan terms, thereby gaining an unjust competitive advantage. This scenario not only undermines the principles of fair competition but also inflicts significant harm on the honest business owner, eroding trust and distorting the market. Such laws are instrumental in safeguarding the integrity of the financial ecosystem, ensuring that success is anchored in merit rather than deceit. The laws protect not just individual businesses but the economy at large, maintaining a level playing field for all participants.

I am a frequent GoFundMe contributor who is very much opposed to the organization supporting Donald Trump’s legal fees. I will no longer support GoFundMe if they do not cancel this fundraiser. I will not donate to any more money. Thank you for the article. I wish to express my dissatisfaction directly to GoFundMe but could not find a way to contact them directly. If you have that information. I would appreciated it. Thank you.

If you do not agree with the funding just don’t contribute. You cannot command an organization to only set up funding for only those you approve. That’s why this country is in such a state today! I have contributed to many funds also but not to those I disapprove. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions but should not be forced on others as a threat.

This “kangaroo court system” is absolutely ridiculous. There is NO fairness, nor justice being demonstrated here. The banks and other institutions where Donald Trump borrowed money, checked out the values of his assets, etc. before they loaned him the money. The loaners testified that NO MONEY was lost and all that was borrowed had been paid back in a timely fashion. What is the judge’s problem? What is the democrat’s problem? This is becoming such a Communistic nation with the one-sided judicial system. Americans deserve better. Americans deserve JUSTICE for Donald Trump. Throw out all these ridiculous charges. Go after the real criminals! The Bidens….selling out to China and the Ukraine.

Before all of this went to trial, trump’s attorneys filed their motions before Judge Engoron. One of the things they did was to select no jury trial meaning Judge Engoron needed to go through all of the paperwork from those years in question about trump’s real estate dealings and determine what fraud if any had been committed. If you had been reading, listening and paying attention to all the pretrial work you’d know why trump was found guilty of fraud. All of this is easily found online even the court documents. The fact that trump’s attorneys selected no jury means the judge was left to determine guilt or innocence. Clearly, after reviewing the case material it was easily found that trump had indeed committed fraud for years leaving the trial only to determine how much trump owed for his crimes.
Instead of blowing off your steam because you chose to follow the nonsensical ranting you hear from your “support group” you should have been keeping up by reading court findings. A little research goes a long way and you wouldn’t come across like a maga dimwit.

The gofundme fund raiser is quickly drying up as people have lost their initial enthusiasm.

In the first few days it was receiving around $150,000 a day in donations. However, in the past two days its barely raised a combined total of $30,000 which averages out at $15,000 a day which represents a 90% drop in donations.

At the current rate of donations at $15,000 a day it will take over 60 years to raise the amount required but even that is a generous estimate as it wont be long before the daily donations fall even lower.

This fund raiser now only represents an embarassment for Trump as the drop in support is stark and is there for everyone to see.

Because of the embarassment factor I think it is inevitable that the page will soon be taken down by the foolish woman who started it, no doubt citing some “noble” reason for her doing so, but she wont be fooling anyone.

Exactly. Now I’m waiting for Lara Trump to take over the RNC and give all THAT money to her fil. Republican politicians must be sweating, wondering where their own campaign money is going to come from because Trump is a bottomless pit.

I think with information out that our Great President and future President Donald J Trump
Will make 10 Billion dollars. That’s right 10 billion of his social media platform.
      He created that Platform.
I think he’ll have plenty of money for these
Election inference cases and plenty more.
