The Suffolk University men’s baseball team finished the regular season with an extremely impressive 13-1 Great Northeast Athletic Conference record (21-17 overall) and was honored with 15 GNAC awards for the 2010 season. Head Coach Cary McConnell garnered his fifth Coach of the Year Award in his 15th season with the team. Freshman Jhonneris Mendez was voted GNAC Rookie of the Year. Mendez, who took over the third base position during the season, hit a team-best four home runs, while appearing on the mound 11 times to finish the season with a 3-2 record. He also had four saves to go with that, proving his ability at the plate and on the mound. Other notable awards handed out were given to graduating senior Bobby Barrett, who was a first-team selection, along with senior Marc Doyle, junior Andrew Babb, and senior Rory Gentile.
The team was selected to play in the Eastern College Athletic Conference tournament after their impressive season, but lost a tough 10-5 game on May 13 to Framingham State College. After scoring five runs the fifth inning, the Rams’ bullpen could not hold on to the lead and allowed Framingham State to jump back into the game, scoring five runs of their own in the eighth inning. Even with the loss, the Rams can look forward to next year as they had 12 freshmen on the team this year, many of whom made significant contributions.
