This week in Suffolk University sports: Men’s hockey fires up the offense in dominant win, men’s and women’s basketball stay undefeated in conference play and indoor track & field opens season.
Men’s hockey delivers six-goal onslaught
Men’s hockey hosted the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University Dec. 6 to wrap up their fall semester action, trouncing the Wildcats with a decisive and dominant 6-0 win.
Daniel McKiernan and Jake Grace scored 1:12 apart in the first period, with McKiernan scoring at 4:19 and Grace at 5:31 to quickly end the day for Wildcats goalie Maxim Zinchenko, who was pulled after allowing two goals on four shots.
With Jake Inzirillo in the game the rest of the way in goal, the Suffolk onslaught continued. Despite Inzirillo making 41 saves, the Rams got goals in the second period from Aidan O’Connell, Bobby Lachance and Ryan Webb to go with a third-period goal from Josh Milso.
Owen Hodgett, Marko Giourof and Nolan Leonard each had two assists, with Leonard extending his point streak to seven games. Grace also had a two-point day while goalie Austin McNicholas picked up an assist on O’Connell’s goal, picking up his first point while stopping all 23 shots on goal from Johnson & Wales for the shutout.
Women’s hockey drops consecutive games to conference rival
Women’s hockey had a home-and-home set with the Conference of New England rival University of New England Nor’Easters, starting with a home game Dec. 5.
Averi Curran, Lainie Lemieux, Madeline Hill and Kaylen Taddia scored for the Nor’Easters while Kyleigh Matola stopped all 33 Suffolk shots on goal to hand the Rams a 4-0 loss to start the two-game weekend.
The next day, Suffolk didn’t fare any better. Matola put together another shutout in goal, this time stopping 39 shots as UNE won 3-0. Jenna Kirch, Amanda Forziati and Hannah Humes scored for the Nor’Easters as they put the final touches on a 0-2 weekend for the Rams. Suffolk ends the fall semester with a 4-4-1 overall record and a 4-3-1 record in CNE play.
Men’s basketball wins lone game of week
Men’s basketball improved to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in CNE play when they hosted the Curry College Colonels Dec. 6, winning 68-57 after a second-half surge.
The Rams and Colonels were tied 27-27 at halftime before Suffolk outscored Curry 41-30 in the second half to seal the win. Harrison Neil led the Rams in points with 18, while Connor Strickland and Nick Verdile each had 10.
Neil was one rebound shy of a double-double with a nine-rebound game while also leading the team in assists with four. Suffolk’s bench outscored Curry’s 31-12, with Neil playing a large role in the bench production.
Women’s basketball continues season-opening surge
Like the men’s team, women’s basketball hosted Curry and walked away with a win. Suffolk took this one by a 12-point margin, winning 58-46 over the visiting Colonels.
Allison Bono was the star of the show for the Rams, putting up 20 points thanks to a 10-for-12 day in field goals. She also secured a double-double with a 10-rebound day. Jordan Moreau was the only other Ram in double figures, thanks to a 13-point day. Suffolk’s only three-pointer of the day came from Olivia Verdile, who had six points.
Track & field opens season at Suffolk relays
Men’s and women’s track & field began the indoor season at the Suffolk Relays Dec. 6. Seven members of the women’s team and seven of the men’s team notched personal records at the meet, while seven on each team made their collegiate debuts as well.
Sofia Moukaddem, Amy Pattelena and Tess Drury also competed at the Early Bird Invitational Dec. 6. All three raced in the 5-kilometer run and all notched personal bests. Moukaddem ran a 17:45 to finish in fourth place, with Drury right behind her in fifth with a 17:45.32. Pattelena finished in 21st with an 18:32.29 showing.
