Despite an emotional start to the season, Suffolk University’s men’s soccer team remains focused and hungry for success as it sets its sights on a historic campaign.
Vice-captain and center back Ricardo Feliciani spoke candidly about the team’s performance, mindset and aspirations in a recent interview.
“It’s been a roller coaster of emotions,” Feliciani admitted when asked about the early part of the season. “But there’s a lot to be excited about and lots to play for.”
Coming off one of the most successful seasons in program history that included winning the Conference of New England championship, expectations are high for this year’s squad. Feliciani believes this team might be capable of something even greater.
“This team has the potential to go above and beyond,” Feliciani said confidently. “The environment within the group is excellent, and the quality of players is the best Suffolk has ever seen. If we stay focused on the key details, we’ll achieve great success.”
One of the standout stories of the season so far has been the return of goalkeeper Ian Caldwell, who missed much of last year due to a shoulder injury. His performance in a recent match against Amherst College, a three save shutout, drew praise from both fans and his teammates.
“I’m really happy with the way he’s been playing,” said Feliciani. “After not being able to play much last year because of his shoulder, the way he’s bounced back and delivered such a strong performance against Amherst shows not only his character but also the amount of potential he has.”
That match against Amherst ended in a draw, but it felt like a victory for Suffolk due to Amherst’s recent NCAA Division III Championship. After the final whistle, players celebrated with fans and alumni in a powerful moment of community and pride.
“It’s a huge result,” said Feliciani. “But we won’t let it be the highlight of our season. We believe we have the potential to make history for Suffolk and make a deep run into November in the NCAA tournament.”
He made sure to clarify that a draw against Amherst was not enough, and the team is focused on its future. With a combination of seasoned leadership and fresh talent, the Rams are proving that they are more than capable of competing at the highest level.
As conference play looms and the pressure builds, Suffolk remains grounded in its goals: to play quality soccer, support each other and chase down a deep postseason run that could redefine the trajectory of the program.
If early indications are any sign, the Rams are not only ready for the challenge — they’re ready to make history.
Suffolk’s next conference game comes on the road against Endicott College Sept. 20, with their CNE opener lined up Sept. 27 against Curry College.
