The Suffolk men’s hockey team is set to open the season Nov. 5. They will open up their new slate against Assumption College, and look to start off the season on a high note.
Head Coach Chris Glionna, who is in his sixth season as the Rams’ leader, will look to improve from last year’s record of 12-11-3 [8-4-2 in the ECAC]. The Rams suffered a 3-1 defeat to Johnson and Whales to end the year. With a bitter taste in their mouths, Coach Glionna and his supporting cast will now look to improve on last year’s disappointment and make strides toward a better season.
“We are excited for our seniors.” said Glionna. “We think Jeff Rose could be one of the best goalies in the nation if we play good defense in front of him. Paul Weisser and Zack Barron could be very strong offensive players if they can stay healthy. Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brian Phillips are also poised for breakout seasons up front. On defense Tom Coulstring and Dan Dandreo bring great physical play and leadership. The sophomore class looks to build off a great freshmen season, Jason Molle, Andrew Flynn, Rob Donahue, Andy Monesi, Matt Robertson, and Dan Feyock.”
Having lost their top scorers in Niles Moore and Pat Welsch, there will be an opening for certain players to earn significant playing time. The team will also be able to avenge the postseason loss on Nov. 21 when they officially suit up against Johnson & Wales.
Captain Jeff Rose and his assistants, Paul Weisser and Tom Coulstring, will be the leaders of a very promising group.
Gliona sounded very optimistic about the status of his promising verteran players.
“[They’re] very good, the seniors have done a nice job of creating a culture of hard work. Our strength and conditioning Coach Steve Fogarty always has the boys in good shape.”
With the team losing seven seniors from last season, Glionna is looking forward to the production of the incoming freshman.
“We are very excited about this year’s recruiting class,” he explained. “They will provide a lot of depth. Jon Stauffer and John-Michael Leach will get a chance to contribute right away on defense with the graduation of three defensemen last year. Max Barron, James Chamness, Dave Seidell, and Charlie McGinnis are all capable of scoring goals.”
With everyone on board for this season under the wing of Jeff Rose, the boys are excited to lace up their skates and get the season started on a positive note. With a strong defensive core, offensive potential and a tight knit group of fundamental hockey players, this season could prove to be a turning point in the Suffolk hockey program.
