OMG-
This online edition is 1,000 miles away from what we had in the early 80’s. I covered Men’s Hockey, Men’s + Women’s Basketball, and Baseball.
At the Cambridge Y, (Suffolk’s home basketball court) I covered a game where the women pulled out a win with no time left on the clock!
Behind by a point, and without the ball, all Nichols needed to do was inbound the ball to start the clock. Suffolk pressured, and Nichols never inbound, turning the ball over.
Suffolk had the ball under the basket. The Ram guard tossed it to another Ram on the foul line, and she redirected it to the hoop, beating the buzzer. Nichols, of course, thought they’d been jobbed, but the rule is~ if the shot is out of the hands of the shooter before the horn (and goes in) it’s counted.
Joe Walsh, then Assistant A.D., quipped, ”That’s the longest second in Suffolk’s history.” The Rams went nuts.
Working at The Suffolk Journal and The Suffolk Evening Voice was a blast. I almost flunked out of school, but am glad I got to do some writing.
Today, I’m a retired teacher living in Jacksonville, FL.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
