Every Avenue is Picture Perfect

Article By: Ashley MaceliPicPerfect

Every Avenue, a band who should receive more recognition than they get, have always been known for their sweet lyrics and pop-punk rock jams. Their first full-length album, Shh…Just Go With It (Fearless Records, 2008) was a complete success full of feel-good songs and lovable lyrics. It makes sense that a fan would be nervous because the first album was so amazing, they think the next one won’t be as good. Luckily, Every Avenue knows how to up their game.

Now, Every Avenue has made a strong comeback with their newest power-pop album, Picture Perfect (Fearless Records, 2009), and the improvement is quite pleasing. The new single “Tell Me I’m A Wreck” is certainly catchy and all around well written, yet it is not the best song on the album, but with an album full of gems, it’s actually hard to decide on one best song.

One of the best songs on the album, “Mindset” contains cute lyrics against a happy and cheery song, and even though there are lots of love songs on Picture Perfect, there are definitely some heartbreaking ballads including “The Story Left Untold” and “Happy The Hard Way.” For the most part though, this album is filled with feel-good songs. The cheery songs

“For Always, Forever” and “Girl Like That” make is easy to listen through this entire album.

The fact that the songs are so catchy keeps the songs stuck in your head all day. Sadly, the title song “Picture Perfect” is the worst song on the album. It’s rather dull, but it doesn’t take away from the album as a whole.

Though this album may be better than their first effort, lead singer David Strauchman’s voice did not seem to have the same effect. Strauchman used to hit some incredible notes and sing some vast ranges on Shh…Just Go With It such as in the song “Think of You Later (Empty Room),” but on this album he seems to be more timid in hitting those notes. Strauchman’s voice has always been on the high side, which may be one of the reasons that these songs are so great, but if he could have hit a few more high notes on this album, it may have given a bit of something more.

Let’s face it, most power-pop bands suck these days. Each one sounds as crummy and similar to the other and you can’t even tell the difference between appearances (it doesn’t help when they all wear the same “Glamour Kills” T-shirts). Every Avenue may give off a similar exterior, but upon listening to their album, it is clear to see that even though this band may be as equally poppy (minus the terrible auto tune and excessive synth) it is easy to hear the more mature pop sound.
