A look at upcoming films

Nothing feels better than walking into a cold movie theater in the middle of a hot blazing summer, or loading up the car with food and friends to go see a movie at the drive-in.

Summer movie blockbusters always seem to be the best of the year, and this summer’s upcoming films seem to be no exception. Many of this summer’s big movies are sequels or part of a series, but as long as you’ve seen the first movie, you can start planning out which movies you’d like to see.

The last day of Suffolk’s final exams is May 6, which is just in time for the release of Iron Man 2 (Paramount Pictures, 2010), which is out on May 7. Directed by Jon Favreau, who brilliantly directed the first Iron Man (Paramount Pictures, 2008), this movie takes place six months after the first one left off. Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr., is trying to cope with the world knowing his secret identity since he revealed it to the press at the end of the first movie. Nonetheless, billionaire Stark still has enemies after him, and with his assistant, Pepper Potts (played by Gwyneth Paltrow), and his right hand man, James “Rhodey” Rhodes (played by Don Cheadle), Stark is ready to reprise his role of the superhero Iron Man and fight the evil terrorists. This movie looks packed with great action and amazing special effects. Fans of the first Iron Man or the comic book should definitely check this out when it hits theaters.

Another sequel, in theaters on May 21, is one for the whole family: Shrek Forever After (Paramount Pictures, 2010). The Shrek films are known for being quite humorous to children with some inappropriate, hilarious jokes that only adults comprehend. Reprising their voices in the roles of Shrek, Fiona, Donkey and Puss in Boots are Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas, respectively. In this last installment of the films, Shrek realizes that he misses the days of being an ogre. After telling this to a sly Rumpelstiltskin, Shrek signs a contract with him stating that Shrek gets to be his old dirty, mud loving ogre again for a day, and Rumpelstiltskin gets to live in the life of royalty for the day. All of sudden, Shrek is back in his old swamp, and realizes that Rumpelstiltskin tricked him by making it so Shrek had never been born so that Rumpelstiltskin would be King of Far, Far Away. All of Shrek’s friends have changed and no longer know him, and in order to change the alternative Far, Far Away back into the original, Shrek and Fiona must share “true love’s kiss” before sunset the next day. This movie looks packed with laughs for children and even more laughs for adults. The Shrek films are great, easy movies to go see, especially on a hot summer day.

One movie that will have every girl (and a few boys) at the movie theater is the highly anticipated Eclipse (Summit Entertainment, 2010), the third installment from Stephanie Meyer’s books, The Twilight Saga. Back  in Forks, Washington, Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) must choose between her true love, vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and the best friend she has developed feelings for, werewolf Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner). Her decision could spark a war between the two supernatural races, which are notorious for never getting along. This movie is sure to be packed with action, fights, and a lot of topless men. Judging by previews, “twihards” will not be disappointed.

Sex and the City 2 (Warner Brothers, 2010) comes out on May 28, and even though the plot line of this movie is a little bit fuzzy, it looks sure to be packed with sex, high fashion, the Arabian desert, and, of course, New York’s favorite girls, Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes, Charlotte York and Samantha Jones.

The big comedy of the summer looks to be Grown Ups (Columbia Pictures, 2010). Out on June 25, this Adam Sandler-scripted movie is about a group of former high school basketball teammates who reunite years later when their old coach dies. All the buddies get together with their families and spend Independence Day weekend at the same lake house where they celebrated their basketball championship as kids. Along with Sandler, this hilarious cast includes Kevin James, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider and David Spade. How can a movie go wrong with such a great cast?

Other interesting movies to look out for are Robin Hood (Universal Pictures, 2010), The Karate Kid (Columbia Pictures, 2010), Toy Story 3 (Disney/Pixar, 2010), The Last Airbender (Paramount Pictures, 2010), and The Expendables (Millennium Films, 2010).
