2010 Festival Forecast: Coachella

Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, located in Indio, California, across the country from Boston, is being held for the 11th time this year. Started in 1999, the festival prides itself on mixing genres. In 2004, thousands of people came, eventually making the entire festival a sellout. That year, Massachusetts’ own Pixies reunited on the stage for the first time since their break up. Three years later, rock band Rage Against the Machine reunited, breaking the record of attendees.

Originally, due to worries that the festival would be a repeat of 1999’s Woodstock revival, the festival did not allow camping on the grounds. The ban was lifted in 2003, and camping in tents has been allowed ever since.

Coachella also strives to support sustainability, with a calling to artists to help design the exteriors of recycling bins this year.

This year’s festival includes college-rock favorites Spoon, who released their latest album Transference last month. College-rock legends Pavement have also announced that they will play the festival during their reunion year, which is a huge deal to some, since the band has developed a cult following since their breakup. Other artists include major amounts of indie rock acts including Grizzly Bear, GIRLS, Frightened Rabbit, Mike Snow, Passion Pit, Beach House, Camera Obscura, and Kevin Devine. Acts such as Gorillaz always bring good audiences due to the limited shows they put on.

Coachella will take place  from April 16-18 in Indio, California.
