Interview: Sketchual Misconduct

Hello lovely followers! As many of you know, tonight is the date of Sketchual Misconduct’s semester show!!! This semester their theme is “The Sound of Pizza” and as part of this they are roasting Senior member Alex Pappas. We sat down with Pappas to talk about his involvment with the group.

What is your grade and major?
I am a senior, and I am a double major in Theatre and Communications (Public Relations Focus)

When did you first become interested in sketch comedy?
I’d probably have to say when I was probably 9-10 years old, that was right around the time my dad got me into SNL by showing me the SNL 25th Anniversary special he recorded on VHS. That makes me feel so old saying VHS.

What made you originally want to start/join Sketchual Misconduct?
Well, I really wanted to be involved with something on campus where I’d be able to work on my comedy chops, and I saw a flyer that they were having auditions for a new sketch group so I thought I’d definitely try and give it a shot

If you could be in a sketch with any comedians living or dead, who would you pick?
That’s tough one there are so many! Um, I’d have to say Harold Ramis, Bill Hader, Bill Murray, Chris Kattan, Richard Pryor, Dan Akroyd, Moe, Larry and Curley, Abbot & Costello, Jimmy Fallon, George Carlin, John Belushi, Chris Farley, Zack Galafinakis and Christopher Walken (for good measure).

What’s been your favorite sketch you’ve ever been in?
That’s a really tough one. Probably a three way tie between Sexcapades, LATANYA, and the Time Machine bits. But they’re some sketches in this upcoming show that are in serious contention for favorite, but I’m not going to spoil anything.

How have you seen the group grow in your time in Sketchual Misconduct?
You know, this group has really grown for the better from the beginning. It’s feels weird to say that knowing that I’ve been with the group since it first started but I honestly mean that. We’ve had some interesting people come and go, but there’s always been a trend of members coming in with really creative and original material who want to be here and make people laugh. Its trend that I know will continue to happen keep this group going because that’s what college is all about. You want to be here learning and doing what you are passionate about.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to people interested in sketch comedy?
Probably the same advice that Bill Murray once told me in person, “To make yourself look good, you make others look even better”.

Are you excited to be roasted on stage?
Absolutely not haha. I’ve always hated roasts but I know people have been looking forward to this for a long time, so I don’t want to disappoint. I’ll be a good sport about it. It’s always good to be able to laugh at yourself.

What would you tell people coming to go see the show on Thursday?
It’s going to be a really awesome show. With this being my last show, I’ll be going all out to make some memories along with the rest of the cast. There are going to be some emotions, and probably not that many dry eyes, hopefully from all the laughs.

We hope you enjoyed this interview! If you are interested in seeing this show (and you should be) tickets can be reserved by emailing [email protected]. The show is tonight at 7:00 PM in the Modern Theatre, we hope to see you there!
